Video Production 8

May 1st

One of the basic concepts of filmmmaking is SHOT TYPES.  Please refer to the following website for an explanation of various shots. The list does not include every type that exists but is an excellent starting resource.

For your sixth assignment, replicate the framing on 10 of the following shot types by filming VIDEOS.   Each shot should last around 5 seconds to demonstrate proper framing. To earn full marks the subject should be performing an ACTION that justifies the use of that particular shot. The goal is to show variety. Seeing the same action over and over again in different shot types will NOT earn full marks.

For the fifth assignment, no filming is required if have already completed your 4th assignment.  You will be combining the footage that you took with the footage taken by a classmate to create a parallel edit.  If you worked with a parter, look for another set of partners to trade footage with.  We will go over in class where iMovie stores videos from your previous projects.

The format will be as follows:

- two people each perform five actions

- the ten actions should ideally all be different (Person A ties shoe, Person B ties shoe, etc... this should be avoided)

- each action has two angles/shots with one cut taking place somewhere DURING the action (not before or after)

- each time we cut back to the same person the person should be wearing the same clothes

Refer to the pdf  below for a visual representation of the assignment.

*** Note that the only times you see someone walk into or out of the frame are in the first and last shots of the entire video.

For the fourth assignment you can either work with a partner or hand in two assignments if you are working in a group of three.  It is a continuity exercise. You will film a person performing FIVE different actions in five different locations while wearing the same clothes. PLAN well and complete all the filming on the SAME DAY.  Do not expect anyone to look exactly the same on multiple days. EACH of the five actions should be filmed from three different angles and edited together as described by the pdf file below.

If your actions can be completed quickly (such as opening a door, picking up something from the ground, etc) they will not work. The best actions will have the person INTERACTING WITH OBJECTS for at least 10 seconds.  Use the tripod properly and do not touch it while filming. Your completed video will have the person complete all five actions back to back. It will appear as if the person did them continuously.

For your third assignment you can either work by yourself or preferably with a partner.  Come up with a roughly 15 to 25 second movement sequence that can be PERFORMED STATIONARY WITHIN a small space (approximately one metre squared).  Examples would be a simple dance, stretching, or mime routine.  Extreme repetition such as doing jumping jacks for the entire time will not demonstrate proficiency.   The key is to have visible joint (shoulder/elbow/knee) movements.  Film the ENTIRE sequence from 5 different angles.  Use iMovie (or Capcut) to edit them together as seamlessly as possible so that it appears the sequence was only performed once.  Show the sequence from each angle for roughly 3 to 5 seconds.

Your second assignment is to tell a VERY SIMPLE story with exactly 3 pictures (preferably LANDSCAPE).  No videos.  Sequence your 3 pictures using iMovie or Capcut to create a slideshow to tell your story.  Each picture should serve a PURPOSE and be NECESSARY to tell the story.   Add a title and credits.

The first assignment is to make a short LANDSCAPE video (aim for 1 to 2 minutes) telling me about yourself to help me learn names.  This video will NOT be shown to the class.  Use one of my point-and-shoot cameras.  Grading will NOT depend on image stability so tripods are not necessary, but please do your best to keep your videos steady.  You may edit clips together so the video does not have to be one continuous take.

Here are some possible topics to discuss in your video:

1) Talk a little about some of your positive experiences at Seaquam so far.

2) Talk about some of the things you are looking forward to from now until June.

3) Tell me a little about some of your hobbies and what you enjoy doing outside of school.  Elaborate.

4) Talk a little about some of your past accomplishments that you are proud of.

5) Tell me about anything else that you would like to share about yourself.
